Asset
Anything with economic value that can be owned, traded, or used to generate returns — stocks, bonds, currencies, commodities, crypto.
An asset is any resource with economic value that an individual or institution can own or control to generate future benefit. In markets, assets are the underlying things you actually buy and sell.
Assets are broadly grouped into classes:
- Equities — stocks and shares
- Fixed income — bonds and notes
- Commodities — oil, gold, wheat
- Currencies — forex pairs
- Alternatives — real estate, crypto, derivatives
Understanding which asset class you are trading matters because each has different risk profiles, liquidity characteristics, and market hours.
